CREATIVE WRITING
Title: Letter of complaint or compliment to the newspaper
Write a letter to the newspaper to:
· Compliment an article that appeared in it/ or
· Criticize an article appearing in it.
Task one:
Students read two articles (chosen by the teacher or the student) from a newspaper with the aim of finding positive points (student can highlight these points in one color) and negative points (highlight in another color).
Task two:
Students choose one of the articles to write about – either complimenting/agreeing or criticizing it.
Use helping words such as:
To disagree: INSULTING/NEGATIVE/BIASED/NARROW/FALSE/EXTREME/SHALLOW
To agree: COMPLIMENT/POSITIVE/OPEN/MULTI-FACETED/AWARE/HONEST/IMPRESSIVE
After writing your letter….
Task three:
Find more words using a thesaurus or book of synonyms to find words to describe positive and negative feelings towards a topic you may be writing or talking about.
Task four:
Newspaper advertisements can be approached in this way in another lesson. The letter can be addressed to the advertisers instead of the newspaper.
