ABC Learning :  Speaking and Drama

Picture
VOCABULARY & DRAMA ACTIVITY

TITLE:  LEARNING A NEW LETTER FROM THE ABC

  • Show a flash card or poster of a new letter to be learned in the lesson.

  • Say the name of the letter and also give its phonetic sound (This is “L” an el , the sound is “ll”) What words do you know that start with a “ll” sound?

  • Ask the students to mimic you and draw the new letter in the air.

  • Give the new letter card to a student to hide somewhere in the classroom. All the students watch where it is hidden.

  • Present several more cards in the same way.

  • “Where’s the letter activity”
When the above is complete, ask a student to find the “k” or the “l” or whatever has been shown and hidden previously.  The memorization of the hiding place adds incentive to a learning student to remember the name and shape of the new letter.  The connection between the place and the letter will also add to memorization.  The game will particularly help students who have learning difficulties with absorption by presenting the letters in a fun, unstressed situation.

Drama/Movement activity:
  • Each student chooses one of the cards and has to form the letter with his/her body.
  • Guessing game:  Each student thinks of one of the letters, forms the shape with his/her own body, while the class guesses what letter was presented.

Poster/Crafts:
  • To practice, the student can draw and illustrate a poster with the new letters learned in today’s lesson
