MODALS: USING “SHOULD” / “SHOULDN’T/ SHOULDN’T HAVE /  PAST AND PRESENT MODALS TO GIVE ADVICE/  HINDSIGHT ADVICE OR SHOW REGRET

A:

Did you take the last piece of cake?

B:
Yes, why?

 A:

You shouldn’t have taken it. It was for John.

B:

Why should John get it and not me?

 A:

Because you ate half the cake yesterday. You shouldn’t have, because you’re on a diet.

 B:

Why shouldn’t I eat this cake?  It’s made of fruit, nuts and healthy things?

 A:

Yes, but there are many calories in those. You should eat fresh fruit and no cake or bread at
all.

 B:

You shouldn’t tell me what to do.  You shouldn’t tell me what to eat.  You shouldn’t have made such a  delicious cake because I am on a diet and can’t say no to cake.

A:

You’re right.  I should have thought about that.  I shouldn’t have shown the cake to you.
I’m sorry.  Tomorrow I’ll buy only fresh fruit and vegetables.

B:

 Thanks a lot!!
